Day 37

by thepilge on Nov.22, 2009, under

So for something a little different, i give you todays playlist in short story form. Ahem:

One day a married couple decided to visit Hotel Yorba on The Night That The Lights Went Out In NYC. The next day there was a Bicycle Race and they decided to join in, but they were cut off by a rogue biker after a few laps. The wife fell off her bike and tumbled Down and Out, though whether it was the rogue's fault only Time Will Tell. The husband decided to face the rogue because Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting, so he grabbed a nearby Brick and started ramming the Tvc15 model bike. The rogue said The Phrase That Pays, "Im sorry," and the wife decide it was time to go Home Now. She said "Hold My Hand, my sweet Hero" and he took The Crane Wife 3 to bed. "Lucille, Good Morning Good Morning" he whispered the next day. Her name was Dora, not Lucille. She Said She Said "this is a Total Eclipse of the Heart, i thought i was Your Only Doll (Dora)! Is this slip up the Aftermath of a One Night Stand?" She Said, She Said. He insisted it was an accident and thought to himself "If Only She Knew the secrets of this Magnolia Soul."

Gold Star: "Brick" by Ben Folds Five. I know its kind of overdone sometimes but i still cant get enough. P.S. this song is about an abortion. In case you like, didnt know and live under a rock.

I forgot i liked this band award: "The Crane Wife 3" by The Decemberists. They remind me a little of Death Cab or The New Pornographers sometimes, if that isnt too crazy. You should check this one out. This is actually part of a 3 song series. The Decemberists got the idea from an old Japanese fable. I kind of fell in love with it, so here is the wikipedia version:

The Crane Wife is an old Japanese tale. While there are many variations of the tale, a common version is that a poor man finds an injured crane on his doorstep (or outside with an arrow in it), takes it in and nurses it back to health. After he releases the crane, a woman appears at his doorstep with whom he falls in love and marries. Because they need money, his wife offers to weave wondrous clothes out of silk that they can sell at the market, but only if he agrees never to watch her making them. They begin to sell them and live a comfortable life, but he soon makes her weave them more and more. Oblivious to his wife's diminishing health, his greed increases. He eventually peeks in to see what she is doing to make the silk she weaves so desirable. He is shocked to discover that at the loom is a crane plucking feathers from her own body and weaving them into the loom. The crane, seeing him, flies away and never returns.

Cool right? That's what i thought too.

Im so ashamed song of the day: "Hero" by Chad Kroeger. Okay.... so here's the thing... i kind of maybe sort of possibly dont hate this song. Like maybe a little bit of the opposite of hate it. Like im okay listening to it. ..... Do you get what im saying? See, Chad Kroeger is the lead singer of Nickelback AKA Satan's Messengers. Since i hate them with a passion (cuz they are douchebags) i should hate this song. But i may or may not.... im done talking about it. Im so ashamed.

90's song of the day: "Hold My Hand" by Hootie & The Blowfish. I LOVE THIS SONG! If you dont have it already, download it here.

What are the chances that i would get 3 Beatles songs in a row???? i mean seriously, i wanna know. Can anyone help me out with the statistics here? Wait, i think i know what to do. I have 310 Beatles songs out of 8511, so the chance of one song playing is 310/8511. Then you multiply it by the chance a Beatles song will play again, which is 309/8510, then multiply that by the 3rd chance, or 308/8509. So its roughly an ice cubes chance in hell (or .0049 percent or 49/1000000 for those of you who really want to know). I love math sometimes.

Cool cover award: "She Said, She Said" by The Black Keys. How the fuck is it that both versions of this song were on the list today? i love these little coincidences, they keep me on my toes.

Rediscovered song of the day: "Your Only Doll (Dora)" by Laura Marling. The best part of this song comes at the end, about 5 minutes in. There is a hidden track that also doubles as the album name called "Alas, I Cannot Swim." It is one of my favorite tracks off of the album:

Theres a house across the river
but alas i cannot swim
And a garden of such beauty
that the flowers seem to grin
Theres a house across the river
but alas i cannot swim
I'll live my life regretting that i never jumped in
!

you see why? alas...

More to come tomorrow.
