My life today in lyrical form award: "Gray Or Blue" by Jaymay. I got into Jaymay while in Asheville and am so glad i did. This is my favorite of hers. Download it here. It is so good in fact that im posting the entire song's lyrics:

I feel so helpless now, my guitar is not around
And I'm struggling with the xylophone to make these feelings sound
And I'm remembering you singing and bringing you to life
And It's raining out the window and today it looks like night

You haven't written to me in a week I'm wondering why that is
Are you too nervous to be lovers, friendships ruined with just one kiss
I watched you very closely I saw you look away
Your eyes are either gray or blue I'm never close enough to say

But your sweatshirt says it all with the hood over your face
I can't keep staring at your mouth without wondering how it tastes

I'm with another boy; he's asleep, I'm wide awake
And he tried to win my heart, but it's taken time

I know the shape of your hands because I watch them when you talk
And I know the shape of your body 'cause I watch it when you walk
And I want to know it all but I'm giving you the lead
So go on, go on and take it, don't fake it, sh
ake it

Charmin, crazy eyes have you
are they gray or blue,
I won't make the move
you must make the move
if you make the move
I will then approve
if you do not move
we will surely lose

Don't second guess your feelings you were right from the start
And I notice she's your lover, but she's nowhere near your heart

This city is for strangers, like the sky is for the stars
But I think it's very dangerous if we do not take whats ours

And I'm winning you with words because I have no other way
I'd love to look into your face without your eyes turning away
Last night I watched you sing because a person has to try
And I walked home in the rain because a person cannot lie

This one says it all for me today.

Uplifting song of the day: "Five Candles (You Were There)" by Jars Of Clay. Jars is my sister's favorite band, so ive listened to them more than i realize, simply by accident. This is one of my favorites. I was confused and surprised by the trippiness of the music video, but then i realized the song was released in 1997. Music videos in the 90's had no relevancy to the plot of the song or anything close to sane. Got it. makes sense now. moving on.

Hidden Gem: "Slipping Away" by Sum 41. Its a slower song featuring acoustic and electric guitars that has generic "im in pain slash struggling with something in my life" lyrics. Easy to relate to, since its so vague. Which can be fun.

Most heavily referenced song during our day award: "Suffragette City" by David Bowie. My dad and i were trying to figure out just what a Suffragette City was. Then we would just randomly drop the name at nonsensical times. For instance, "We are on our way to Park City... is that near Suffragette City?" or "Wow that driver is an asshole... must be from Suffragette City" or just "Suffragette City" at any quiet point in the drive. Loved it.

Gold Star: "The Chemicals Between Us" by Bush. The first two shredded chords punctuate the songs intro like rusty screwdriver. I love it. The song has a lot going on in the background if you really listen, especially during the chorus. Bush lyrics are usually ones i relate to, especially these:

I want you to remember
A love so full it could send us all ways
I want you to surrender
All my feelings rose today
And I want you to remain
The power of children can amaze
I'll try not to complain
I know that's a pisser baby

The chemicals between us
The walls that lie between us
Lying in this bed
The chemicals displaced
There is no lonelier state
Than lying in this bed

They are wrought with pain and substance-induced confusion, wrapped up in a longing not completely understood. Genius.

This song is about graduation song of the day: "Closing Time" by Semisonic. No, really, it is. I figured it out when i was like 14.

Closing time - time for you to go back to the places you will be from.
Closing time - this room won't be open 'til your brothers or you sisters come.
So gather up your jackets, and move it to the exits - I hope you have found a friend.
Closing time - every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.

See? totally.

More to come tomorrow.
